Week 29 - Broken Teeth - Viva La Rock Fantastico

(Week 29 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)
“I don’t want to know your name / When you walk into the room tonite.
Just want to watch you dance, watch you prance, burn the room...
You're gonna get it right.”
-       Twister

Broken Teeth
Viva La Rock Fantastico
Perris Records

Long live rock. Long live Broken Teeth. With Viva La Rock Fantastico Jason McMaster (Watchtower, Dangerous Toys) and company has reemerged from the dark recesses of the Red River scene to remind us that a rock show should be a screaming, sleezy party with plenty of guitar solos.

With songs like the title track (which features guest vocals by Danko Jones) “All Hail The Alter” and “Exploder” it’s apparent that Broken Teeth has one thing in mind – the preservation and celebration of straight-up fist-in-the-air rock and roll. Metal church is in session and Rev. McMaster is at the pulpit.

Of course, a good sleeze-rock record wouldn’t be complete without the songs about the ladies (“Twister” and “Bullet”) and aggression (“Spitting Nails”) to round it out.

My personal favorite track on Viva La Rock Fantastico would have to be “Big Spender.” It’s one of those songs about people who are rich and throw money around… but then feel guilty. As Broken Teeth put it.. “visit the hungry, visit the fatted calf.”

21 years after Dangerous Toys released their self-titled debut, McMaster shows he’s still got the chops, skills, and desire to bring it. His voice has dropped into a scratchy-growl but it’s strong as ever. I don’t know if the first single “Blackheart” will reach the radio, but man… it’s better than 75% of what’s on there right now so I wish it would.

Even if it doesn’t end up on the radio, people are taking notice of this release. VH1’s Jim Florentine named it as his pick of the week on “That Metal Show” on the March 13, 2010 show. Even a fan made a funny little YouTube video where even Adolf Hitler touts its greatness.

If you like your rock served up charred with a nice AC/DC and Motorhead taste, you’ll be a fan of Viva La Rock Fantastico. Broken Teeth is McMaster (vocals), Jared Tuten (guitars), David Beeson (guitars), Brett McCormick (bass) and Bruce Rivers (drums). This is their fifth release.

They just played two nights of Texas Rockfest, so they’re not going to be playing in town for a few months, but check their website for upcoming shows - http://www.brokenteeth.com.

Texas Music - Albums of the Decade

The current issue of Texas Music (Winter 2010/Issue 41) is on stands right now with a spotlight on the top 20 Texas albums of the decade. 23 past contributors, including me, were asked to rank their personal top 10 albums. I'm pleased to say that 4 of the artists I chose made the to 20 (but only one of the albums...but it was the top one).

I still like my list better. I really tried to make sure different genres were represented. I went less with "Texas Musicians" and more with "Artists in Texas Who Make Amazing Music" but I can't argue with ANY of the top 20 in the magazine. Over-all it's a great list of "the usual suspects."I would have loved to see Full Service or Driver F in the top 10... but, several in the top 20 were on my short list. Had I gotten a top 30 to list I'm certain Sam Baker (I prefer Cotton over Mercy though), Slaid Cleaves, Alejandro Escovedo, and Patty Griffin would have made the cut. Anyhow...

Pick up a copy of Texas Music and see what was written about the albums... and see below what albums made the top 20 (and a bonus of my choices are below that).

Which list do YOU like better?

The top 10 from Texas Music Magazine
1. Dixie Chicks - Home
2. Rodney Crowell - The Houston Kid
3. Alejandro Escovedo - A Man Under the Influence
4. Alejandro Escovedo - Real Animal
5. James McMurtry - Childish Things
6. Billy Joe Shaver - The Earth Rolls On
7. Hays Carrl - Trouble In Mind
8. Slaid Cleaves - Broke Down
9. Sam Baker - Mercy
10. Steve Earle - The Revolution Starts... Now

11-20 are Spoon-Gimme Fiction, Ruthie Foster - The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, Terri Hendrix - The Spiritual Kind, Willie Nelson - You Don't Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker, Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues, James McMurtry - Just Us Kids, Guy Clark - The Dark, Patty Griffin - 1,000 Kisses, Old 97's - Satellite Radio, Eliza Gilkyson - Hard Times in Babylon, and Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy

Here's what I chose:
Sean Claes’ Top 20 Texas Albums of the Decade

1. Walt Wilkins – Mustang Island (2005)
2. Dixie Chicks – Home (2002)
3. Blue October – Foiled (2006)

Funny Test Answers - A little "have a laugh" moment

I received an e-mail about some funny test answers and they had me cracking up. I don't do "forwards" but since I have a blog... I thought I'd pop some up on here. And I found a couple of YouTube videos that contained what I got in the e-mail.

Enjoy.

Week 28 - Reckless Kelly - Somewhere In Time

(Week 28 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)
“The time I spent with you I swear I’ve never been so high. And if you never really loved me you cared enough to lie.” – You Cared Enough To Lie

Reckless Kelly
Somewhere In Time
Yep Roc Records

Learn from whom you came from. Reckless Kelly take this to heart in a big way on their new release, Somewhere In Time. It’s a tribute album to the songwriting of one of their biggest inspirations, Pinto Bennett and the Famous Motel Cowboys. Twelve tracks (14 if you count the bonus tracks) written by Bennett delivered in the signature Reckless Kelly style.

You may have never heard of Pinto Bennett. That’s OK. I hadn’t either. But he’s a thing of legend in Idaho where the Braun brothers (Cody and Willie) cut their musical teeth before they made the trek to Austin. And after hearing Somewhere In Time I’d have to say there’s a reason he is legend. He is what people may call a songwriters songwriter.

Somewhere In Time is a slight departure musically for Reckless Kelly. Whereas Bulletproof was more of a country-rock record, this album is more of a return to the roots of barroom honky-tonk. And they slip on the sound as easy as you slip on that favorite old t-shirt found at the back of your closet.

Not to say there’s isn’t some rock gems within the CD. “Little Blossom,” the first track on the album, is a pretty hardcore country offering. Joe Ely lends some vocal support to “The Ballad Of Elano De Leone.” And anyone who’s been blindsided with a downsizing (raises my hand) will smile and nod in agreement to “Bird On A Wire.”

But the spotlights on Somewhere In Time are the classic country-sounding tracks like “I Hold The Bottle, You Hold The Wheel,” “Idaho Cowboyand the heartbreaking “Thelma” which features vocals by Bennett himself.

I’d have to say the country-swagger of “Everything I Could Do Wrong” is the stand-out track on an album full of gems. It’s the ultimate song about the guy who just can’t get it right in life. “The road to hell in paved with good intentions / I had good intentions all along / Stopped by the bar to see some old friends / Yeah I had good intentions all along / I done everything I could do wrong.”

I guess sometimes it takes great songwriters to introduce folks to great songwriters via an album like this. Kind of like how Pat Green and Cory Morrow did with 2001’s Songs We Wish We’d Written (Note: I heard an interview with Morrow on KVET a week ago where he mentioned they’re looking at recording a follow-up) or how Garth Brooks let people know about Chris LeDoux in “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)”. Thank you Reckless Kelly for introducing Pinto Bennett.

Reckless Kelly is Willy Braun (vocals, guitar), Cody Braun (fiddle, mandolin), Jay Nazz (drums), David Abeyta (guitar), Chris Schelske (bass). March 26 and 27 they play a 2-night stand at the legendary Gruene Hall. Find more information on them at http://www.recklesskelly.com/.

My Picks for March 17-21 in Austin

OK.. there's a lot of music to be seen this week in Austin. Here's my picks (these are the shows I'm supporting as owner of INsite Magazine). I realize there's a BUNCH of great shows going on... You can read the March 2010 INsite to get bios of a bunch of the Texas Rockfest bands. Other than that, my favorite resource for free shows for the last few years has been the New Music Tipsheet who release a FREE LIST every year - here (in PDF)

So.... Here you go:

Week 27 - The Clouds Are Ghosts - S/T

(Week 27 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)

“Once you were frightened / but now, born again / you’re reminded of how free can be.” – Underwater Level

The Clouds Are Ghosts
The Clouds Are Ghosts

The Clouds Are Ghosts are an Austin-based electronic/ambient outfit who released their freshman effort in late 2009.

The self-titled disc, which is 10 tracks coming in at just over 33 minutes, is something I’ve not heard very often… electronic music that I don’t run from. I’m not a very big fan of the genre, mostly because I feel many of the bands that play this style concentrate too much on the synth-beats and not enough time formulating good lyrical content (if you’re in an electronic band and reading this, I’m talking about those other bands… not you). Not so with The Clouds Are Ghosts. They’ve got something really special going on.

Yes, the drum beats and synths provide the skeleton in the framework of each song, but the songs are fleshed out with guitar, violin, piano, and very well written lyrics.

Songs like “Change,” “Atomic Daydream,” and “Learning” have a real Depeche Mode feel to them. Vocalist Jason Morris’ voice has a strong presence and lends well to the music without overpowering or being overpowered. Alt-rock tracks like “Fields” and “Insomnia” align them musically to Austin’s The Soldier Thread.

They seemed to be very careful where the songs hit on the album, for it builds up to the climax track (number 7), “Vampires” then winds down.

Being that I’m not a huge electronic-music fan it makes sense that my favorite tracks are the piano-driven ballads. My favorite being “We Are Not Alone,” a song lamenting the end of a relationship.  Musically it’s beautiful and lyrically it grabs my attention.

“Waiting for something to happen / something to turn this all around. Pick me up off of the ground. Trying to answer these questions / these questions are keeping me up at night. Leaving me here paralyzed. I cannot tell you why I see. Words are escaping me.”

This is truly emotional music… it evokes feeling. If you let the music in, it will take you on a journey. I’ve not seen them live but if they put it all out there like they seem to do on this record, they must be a phenomenal show to take in.

If you’ve been swayed by this review at all to take a listen to them, well I’ve got good news for you. Their entire album is available as a free download (.zip file). If you like that, how about a free show? Next Friday (3/19) they are playing at The Highball (1120 S. Lamar) with Seven Percent Solution, Death is Not A Joyride and four other bands.

The Clouds Are Ghosts are Jason Morris (vocals, synth, guitar), Erin Fillingame (piano), Jason Flitcraft (violin, synth, guitar), Steven Paul (guitar, synth), and Kevin Butler (percussion)

Week 26 - Eleven Fingered Charlie - Patterns

(Week 26 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)

---

Eleven Fingered Charlie

Patterns

Eleven Fingered Charlie (EFC) has been a mainstay in the Austin/San Marcos music scene for nearly 10 years. In that time, they’ve been infusing reggae with ska and hip-hop in a very good way. I’d describe them as having a laid-back Sublime sound. In February they released Patterns, their third full-length release.

This is one of those albums that can carry the party. Their beat is infectious and could cause a person to break out dancing on a moments notice. Equally impressive are the lyrics which can switch from the party chants (“Stay low… get high” – Early Morning Rises) to cerebral (“Waters going dry / Fire in the sky / Got to make a difference in the days before we die.” - Unfold).

Patterns is a really nice statement of where the band is now. The production is tight and each song is fully realized. A lot of times it takes a much bigger band to make such a full sound but EFC does it with a four piece on this album. Nice.

The eleven tracks meld well together well. “Common Patterns,” a song about facing the truth of addiction, kicks off the album. “Loverman”  is a sweet relationship groove. Then there’s “Entrepreneur,” a very Sublime sounding track about a drug dealer. “River Runs Stronger” is a haunting track about living up to past actions.

The final track on the album is the very Jack Johnson sounding “This Old World.” The nice mandolin driven song is a standout on this album of great tunes. “Staring at this old TV screen to entertain our small minds. But you and I, we both know best. We know what’s going on. We’re just two pieces in this puzzle. In this complicated life.”

If you like your music with a little reggae influence, you’ll really dig Patterns. EFC is Travis Damron (Vocals, Guitar, harmonica), Chad Manes (Bass), Rodney Howell (Tenor Sax, keyboards), and Dustin Hall (Percussion). In March you can catch them at the Red Gorilla Music Festival and day two of ATX Wildfire. Not in Austin? They aren’t afraid of a road show check www.efcmusic.com for updates.
