Holiday Mail For Heroes
(Saw this press release on the Red Cross site and thought I'd share)
“Holiday Mail for Heroes” to Deliver One Million Cards to Service Members and Families
Red Cross, Pitney Bowes to Screen, Sort, Deliver Cards Before Holidays
WASHINGTON, Monday, November 10, 2008 — The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. are teaming up to send holiday cards to service men and women in the United States and around the world. From Tuesday, November 11 until Wednesday, December 10, the public is invited to send holiday cards with their message of thanks and cheer to a special post office box. The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards, and deliver them to military bases and hospitals, veteran’s hospitals, and other locations during the holidays.
Holiday Mail For Heroes continues the Red Cross tradition of service to the armed forces, which includes handling emergency communications that link service members with their families back home, providing access to financial assistance from the military aid societies, counseling, referral to community resources and assistance to veterans. Pitney Bowes is providing all screening, packaging and shipping at no charge, as well as providing thousands of volunteer hours from employees around the country.
“This opportunity is such a great way for the public to personally support the military and say a special thank you for their service this holiday season,” said Gail McGovern, Red Cross President and CEO. “I’m especially proud that the Red Cross is able to be a part of this effort, and I hope everyone will take the time to join us and send an extra card for the military.”
In 2007 Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. approached the Red Cross to distribute thousands of holiday cards coming to the facility for wounded troops. The Red Cross reached out to Pitney Bowes to turn the project into a larger opportunity that could reach members of the military at other facilities. In all, nearly 600,000 cards were screened for hazardous materials, sorted, and delivered in 2007.
“Pitney Bowes is proud to be working with the American Red Cross again to help Americans extend their well wishes and gratitude to the heroes who serve and protect our country,” said Jon Love, President of Pitney Bowes Government Solutions. “Last year’s program was a huge success and we look forward to working with the public to reach even more wounded service members and their families this holiday season to show appreciation and support.”
Holiday cards should be addressed and sent to:
Holiday Mail For Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
Please be sure to affix adequate postage. Cards must be received no later than December 10. Cards received after this date will be returned to senders. To help speed the sorting process and delivery of cards and notes before the holidays, mailers are encouraged to refrain from sending “care packages,” monetary gifts, using glitter or including any other inserts. For a full list of recommended guidelines and best practices, please visit Redcross.org/holidaymail. Cards are also available to print out from the website, along with messages from Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet Members Dr. Phil McGraw and Nancy O’Dell, co-anchor of Access Hollywood. You can also leave a message on the Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Facebook Wall.

KUMC Christmas Festival
All Invited to the KUMC Christmas Festival
Boasting A Live Nativity, Games, Choir Performance, and Wassail

There’s a wonderful tradition of family and fellowship that surrounds Christmas. It is in this spirit that the Kyle United Methodist Church (408 W Lockhart St) invites all of our neighbors to our first ever Christmas Festival on December 13, 2008.
The Festival kicks off at 4:00p.m. and you’ll find refreshments like applesauce cake and wassail (a hot spiced punch). You can do some Christmas shopping as we’ll be selling hand-made items such as baby blankets, fancy Christmas bows, Jars of Joy (decorated ingredient jars for tasty soups, brownies, cookies, and beverages), and other unique gift items and baked goods. There will also be a “New To You” re-gifting booth of brand-new items that will be sold for a heavenly song.
Children of all ages will have plenty to do. We’ll have a booth for face painting and we’ll have games like “Frosty Toss,” “Pin The Nose of Rudolph,” and the “Christmas Card Toss.” We’ve also been in contact with Saint Nicholas, and he said he’d be there as well to say hello and listen to all of the children’s Christmas wishes.
The Children of the KUMC will entertain the crowds with a performance of “The Nativity.” This will include a live Nativity and narration from scripture. You’ll have a chance to sing along with the kiddos when they perform “Silent Night.” They will perform twice, at 5:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. If you’ve ever seen little ones perform…you know it’ll be fun.
Once 7:00p.m. comes, it’s time to head inside the sanctuary for an hour-long performance by the KUMC Choir, led by Choir Director Jenny Sandoval. The title of the performance is “An Old Fashioned Christmas” - The story of a man wishing for the simpler times in which to celebrate Christmas and is told through the diary of a young girl written in the late 1800's.
The KUMC Christmas Festival is free to attend. All the proceeds raised through the Festival will go towards furnishing the children's nursery or to children's playground equipment for the New Life Center being built at KUMC. The entire community is invited to attend. Additional information may be obtained by calling the church office (512-268-2331) or e-maling (KyleUMC@Verizon.net).

Kyle Park Interview 10-08
Kyle Park Returns to Kyle Fair and Music Festival
By Sean Claes
Austin’s Kyle Park is returning this Saturday to play the Kyle Fair and Music Festival for the third year in a row. Currently touring in support of Anywhere In Texas, which he released earlier this month, he took time out in between release shows in Austin, San Marcos, and College Station to answer a few questions.
Sean Claes: You started playing music in bars before you could drive. How’d you get your beginnings in music?
Kyle Park: My cousin, Daniel, bought me my first PA system. He also drove me to my first acoustic shows when I was 15. He would have to come with me, or another parental guardian, to 80% of the events I performed, until I was 18.
I've always loved music. I knew every word to every song on country radio, and I loved singing. Guitar came into play when I learned how to play a Chris LeDoux song on a hand-me-down from my neighbor, and the response I received was "you should learn how to play the guitar." I lived in the country where there wasn't much to do except play outside or watch TV, so I started playing guitar.
Claes: Where was your first gig and how old were you?
Park: The Office Lounge in Georgetown TX when I was 15. It's a small, [used to be] smoky bar that my cousins and uncles used to go to after work. I would play 3 hours or so, usually watching the Houston Astros on TV while I was performing. Mostly covers, but I would play 4 or 5 original tunes.
Claes: The story goes you were “discovered” on Austins KVET (98.1) morning show in 2002 when you were 17. How did all of that come about?
Park: Daniel (now my 'manager') and my uncle were at Hill's Cafe in Austin TX and saw both KVET morning personnel Sam Allred and Bob Cole having lunch. Both of my family members walked up to the two and gave them a 5-song demo that I had recorded, told them a little about me, and persuaded Sam to give it a listen. A few weeks later, Sam played one of the songs on-air on a morning when I was just waking up for high school. I received a phone call from a friend saying, "You're on the radio! Wake up!" I still remember that feeling, it was incredible.
Claes: You just released Anywhere in Texas your follow-up to 2005s Big Time. How do they compare?
Park: Big Time was great because it has no direction, except "I love music, I write songs, and I want to see how everyone will like my music." I didn't have a band, or manager, or anything when I made that CD. It wasn't until afterwards that I put together the band [that I have today], released a single, and acquired the team that I have around me now.
On the other hand, the new album HAS direction, and that is why it is so much better I think. The most frequent (and best) compliment that I get on the road is that we [the band] sound good and tight performing live. When I wrote the songs and recorded Anywhere in Texas I had the band in mind with every song. Although we don't have a fiddle player or B3 player, the album is based upon the 4-piece feel: drums, bass, guitar, guitar. "AiT" is rockin' country, and I think it's something different that people will enjoy and really get in to.
Claes: You celebrated your CD release in Austin on the 1st at a “Roadhouse Live” KVET show. W/ Wade Bowen. Howd the night go?
Park: Great! We had such a great turnout for the release, nearly at full capacity. My family came, which is always great. It's always fun playing with Wade Bowen too, he's one of my favorite's.
Claes: Wade Bowen co-wrote, “A Woman Like You” on your new release. Tell me about that song.
Park: I had written the music line (opening rhythm/lick) before anything else, and I knew I liked it. I started messing around with the lyrics, "Here's your si-gn girl, tell me what you want me to do.." and thought it sounded cool. I called WB, and we got together for about 2 hours. He coined the line "Waitin' on a woman like you", and the we got stuck on the song. I left for a songwriting trip a week later and I finished the song. It's one of my favorites to play; real bluesy, 'Delta Blues'. It's also currently our opening tune when we play live.
Claes: Do you have a favorite track on Anywhere in Texas?
Park: Not really a favorite, but a few stand out. I'm proud of the way “Cold In Colorado” turned out, just because it kind of fell into my hands I feel. I wrote is so fast, and it was stuck in my head for weeks. I started playing it live (acoustic) only weeks before I went to record the album, and people/fans were very responsive with that song, telling me how it was their favorite. I thought it was funny because I didn't even really know it yet! I messed up the lyrics, botched the music, but people still liked it. That's when I knew I had a good song for the record.
Claes: The title track puts a humoristic approach on touring. You’ve been a road dog for the last few years. What was the best memory?
Park: Probably that song and going to Europe in 2007, [laughs]. It was our first long road trip (13 days) as a band, and we really got to know each other on that run. We were so lost! The best thing was that when we got back, we weren't tired of each other yet. Usually 4 guys on the road for that long in those close quarters will want to kill each other when they're done, but not us. It truly feels like family.
Claes: There are some impressive players on the CD, like Lloyd Maines , and members of Asleep at the Wheel and . How’d you assemble such great musicians in the studio?
Park: My manager, John Michael Whitby, has been in the business for a long time now (played 8 years with Asleep at the Wheel, currently plays with George Strait's Ace In The Hole Band and the Randy Rogers Band) and he has introduced me to some of the best musicians in the US. They just happen to be in Texas [smiles]. Surrounding myself with greats like those guys is a privilege, and I'm always amazed at what they come up with on each record.
Claes: You’ve opened for Clint Black and Tracy Lawrence. Ever have any face time with them? Did they give you any advice?
Park: Not with Clint Black, but I did talk to Tracy Lawrence for a little bit. He's super nice, and a fan's best friend as well. He didn't give me any verbal “advice,” but I saw him interact with his fans like no one I had ever seen. When Tracy met his fans, you could tell that he cared about each one. The fans are the ones who pay for things as big as the bus you sit on, and as simple the gas that gets you to the show and the meals that you eat.
Claes: Technically, you could call your show on October 18th at the Kyle Fair and Music Festival your CD Release show for Kyle
Park: Definitely. We've played in Kyle annually for the past 3 years, and we've built a nice fan base in Kyle. Maybe it's because they like my name.
Claes: For those who will see you for the first time on October 18, what can we expect from a Kyle Park show?
Park: High energy and quality music. There are a lot of 4-piece bands out there that sound like rock bands but call themselves country, and that is not us. We're rockin' and we have a good time, but you can still dance to the music. We're different, truthfully. If it's your first time to hear us, it shouldn't be your last.
Claes: Did you get the gig at the Kyle Music Festival based on your name? I mean, Kyle Park at a park in Kyle is pretty fantastic.
Park: [Laughs] I'm not sure, I've wondered that as well. But I do know that it must save some money on advertisement: Kyle Park @ Kyle Park!
Claes: Where are your favorite places to play?
Park: Gruene Hall, Schroeder Hall, the old places are the best. Luckenbach is great too, but I've only played there once. Our first stadium gig was awesome (Dell Diamond). We're playing in Ford Park in Beaumont in a few months. That should be a good one.

Save Austin Music, the grassroots Austin music organization will launch its Austin Music: You’re Invited Public Service Announcement Campaign by hosting a Hollywood-style movie premiere on Friday October 17th at the One World Theatre, just 10 minutes from downtown Austin.
The PSA spots will urge Austinites to “see one Austin band each month” and will be highly visible in Central Texas media outlets from television and radio to print, as well as on the internet. The premiere gala’s audience will get the first look at the PSA on video screens placed throughout the venue between performances by the night’s 6 musical acts.
The PSA campaign, featuring prominent Austin musicians like Ray Benson, Marcia Ball, Gary Clark Jr, Ruben Ramos, and others, will be placed for free with most media outlets, but the organization is raising funds to increase the frequency of ads and duration of the campaign to one year. Save Austin Music plans to raise enough money over the next year to place $5-10k each month in advertising buys.
"This is an opportunity for Austin’s music, political, and business
communities to come together as we open the curtain on a new day for Austin
music," said Save Austin Music founder Troy Dillinger. "In just 9 months we’ve planted roots for a revival of Austin’s most precious local resource and our effort becomes official this night.” He added, “even though the economy is causing more difficulties outside of Austin than in, this event is an opportunity for us all to rally around a new period of creative and economic growth within our city."
The event, which will feature free food & beverages provided by local establishments, a silent auction featuring items from local businesses, and live music by some of Austin’s finest talent, will kick off at 6pm under the reception plaza tent, featuring live music from Austin’s own John Pointer.
More music will take place in the main room of the One World Theatre, and a video simulcast will show throughout the venue as well. SAM founder Troy Dillinger will take the stage with his band at 7pm, followed by Neckbone, Dan Dyer, and Nakia with His Southern Cousins hosting an all-star jam to close the night.
Celebrity guest presenters will include members of Austin’s Live Music Task Force, with more to be announced next week. The event’s sponsors so far include One World Theatre, Tito’s Vodka, Amplify Credit Union, Do512.com, Austin.com, Motorblade Postering and Threadgills. More sponsors will be announced later this week.
The Public Service Announcement was created by a team of volunteers which included director Lee Daniel (Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Fast Food Nation), Scott Conn (Dirt Road to Psychadelia), and collaborative efforts from Blitzkrieg Media and Wolfpack Film Group. Appearing in the PSA are Austin Mayor Will Wynn, Asleep At The Wheel’s Ray Benson, Ian MacLagan (The Faces, Rolling Stones), Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble), Rapid Ric the Mixtape Mechanic, Marcia Ball, Ruben Ramos, Carolyn Wonderland, Gary Clark Jr., James McMurtry, Cindy Cashdollar, Jason McMaster, Rosie Flores, John Pointer, and Ter’ell Shahid.
10% of all money raised by Save Austin Music will be donated to Austin music charities and the rest will be used to fund the PSA Campaign’s media buys. Ticket prices will be $35 for general admission, $20 for working musicians, and VIP packages for 4 will be $350 and will include a gift package. Tickets are available at SaveAustinMusic.com.

I've heard that Nothing More has a stage show like no other (something about a 4 man bass solo) and I've bot heard about Under The Green... but if the other 3 bands are a clue... you should get there early.
Doors open at 9:00 and it's $10 at the door.
It's also an INsite Night... so we'll have stuff to give out... including 2 tickets to the South Padre Islans Music Festival... but you've got to read the October issue of INsite to find out how to win those... HINT...

Helen Soja (August 1, 1922 - October 3, 2006)

Today it has been two years since my grandmother, Helen Soja, passed away. This photo was taken in 2002, the last time she visited our home in Kyle, Texas.
On October 25, I'm going to be participating in the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® in her honor. If you'd like to donate, please visit this link: www.memorywalk.kintera.org/sanmarcos/seanclaes.
'If you visit my page on the Memory Walk you can read some of my memories about her, and see another great photo of her and I from 2002 when Jodie (my wife) and I took her on an “Austin Adventure” Complete with an Austin Duck Tour, trip to Lady Bird Johnson’s Wildflower Center, and a shake from Hut’s Hamburgers.
I miss you Grandma.
