Week 51: To Play Free or Not to Play Free

That's this Weeks Question.

The first week of music in January in Austin, Texas has been known as “Free Week” for almost a decade. It started when Graham Williams (Transmission Entertainment/Fun Fun Fun Fest) was booking at Emo’s and was an attempt to get folks out to a bar during the cold weather in between college semesters.

From a marketing / bar standpoint, it’s a really good idea. And you know what? I’ll probably take a show or two in. There are a couple bands in town I’d like to see, but not enough to pay for them. Did I just write that? Ahem… I mean… well… I mean I’m a very, very cheap person. It’s true. I’ve often said that my family motto is “It’s All About The Free Stuff.”

Of course, I’m a 38 year-old father of two that lives in Kyle, Texas who happens to have been an entertainment writer for the last 15 years. I’m really not your average music fan.

So, I’ve put my thoughts to paper on a few questions you may have (and should have if you’re trying to advance your musical career). It’s too late to be booked for Free Week 2012… but if you’re playing it… or hoping to play it next year, this may be for you.
See the bands playing Free Week 2012 on do512.com/freeweekaustin

1. Does Free Week bring average music fans out?
There is definitely a buzz between the Red River/ 6th Street area during the first week in January. So, yes, there is a lot more people on the street this week because of the event, but they are all craving something free.

The question is, how do you get that average music fan* to see you during free week? Remember it’s not up to the club to promote you. YOU are in charge of getting butts into that club. There are going to be more than 15 clubs in Austin within a mile of each other with bands playing for free.
How are you doing getting people to your show? Did you use the social media? Did you poster up the area? Did you hand out hand-bills? Are you creating a buzz about your show? Did you e-mail media? Try to get on a radio show? Get some press on a local blog? Post your show on places like DO512.com  and Showlist Austin? In short… have you done ANYTHING to tell people about your show?

If not, you’re just playing to play… and that's OK... it shows you’re not serious about the progress of your band, and when you’re done playing your show you can go back to the garage and tinker like you enjoy doing. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, I write this article for musicians who may want a little more out of their musical career.

2. Do you really gain any fans?
You get out what you put in. I’ve seen bands play Free Week that have their entire merch booth set up, I’ve seen others that didn’t have a thing for sale and still others who gave away their album. Remember, there’s a BUNCH of bands playing at the same time. Last year I jumped between 4 different bars. The only bands I remembered were the ones I had something in my pocket from at the end of the night.

3. Who WAS that band?
As mentioned above, I checked out a few bands last year for Free Week. I probably heard 10-15 bands in one evening. I was taking photos AND video. There were a few bands I shot that nobody knew who they were. If you don’t have a sign up letting people know who you are… or at least mention it a few times (or hand something out), how are they going to find you again?

4. Is playing “FREE WEEK” any different than the other free shows you do in town?
The ONLY difference is, there will be 15+ other free choices around you. Everyone is offering their talent for no charge. The question is….well.. #5.

5. How is your band going to stand out?
That’s more of a question for YOU. And you should think outside the box on this one. Here’s a few ideas:
a. Commission an artist to paint a piece of art during your set… and tell people that if they sign up to your mailing list, they have a chance to win a drawing to get to keep the artwork.
b. Give away your CD to everyone who wants it, and go by after the show and offer to autograph it, as an added bonus… or at least say hello and thanks.
c. Costumes. Funny hats. Something outlandish. WARNING, this only works if you have good music… or else you’ll be remembered as that crappy band in English soldier uniforms.
d. Be dynamic from stage. Treat the show like you’re trying to win something. You may be… winning a fan, or maybe a slot opening up for a larger band at that venue.

My FREE advice
(worth much more than it cost you)
So, if you are asking me, playing for no pay is acceptable, as long as you and your band mates have a plan for Return-On-Investment (ROI). Make sure that the time you put into the night… lugging equipment, paying for parking, time away from loved ones, practice time, drinks, etc… is either understood to be a loss, or you have figured out a way to come in even or ahead.

If you’ve read a few of my posts in this series, it should be no surprise when I say that you need to run your band like a business. It’s called the “MUSIC BUSINESS.” The clubs are your stores and your band is your product. You will not get very far if you keep giving away your product, but it’s a good idea to give folks a free sample now and again as long as you’re monitoring the ROI.

Personally, if I were in a band that played the bar scene, I would probably rail against Free Week, unless there was some kind of deal going on behind the scenes with a promoter that promised a bigger (and paying) gig for a positive performance. I’d actually want to play a gig with a cover charge that week… and out-promote and out-rock the freebie clubs.

I asked a few Facebook friends what they thought of playing for Free. My friend Jose Santacruz made a good point, which pretty much encompasses my thoughts as a whole.
“I think as musicians, we sell ourselves short and we let others do it as well. A freebie for charity, for a good cause, for a friend... sure,” he said. “But to go to a club and not get paid while you are keeping the bar full? I don't think so. Owners will make it seem like people will stay no matter what, but what a coincidence that they are staying while you are there too? You did not run them off and you should be paid.”
Another friend chimed in with this sad, but true nugget.
“Let's not forget most weeks in Austin are free weeks,” David Love said.
So, think about this bands playing Free Week: If there’s no ROI, you’re just feeding the bar some money and walking away with less money than you began with.

In a live music scene that is losing more clubs by the day, (the latest casualty is Momo’s Club on 12/27/11), is trying to pack clubs by offering the musicians up for free what will save it? Is that winning? I think not.

To paraphrase and misquote Trey Parker (all apologies to Team America)
“Free Week isn't free! No there's a hefty f’n fee.
And if you don't throw in your buck o'five who will?”
So, next time you go to a live music venue, pay the cover or if there isn’t, throw the band their buck o’five. They deserve it.
Happy New Year everyone. Hope your 2012 is amazing.

The most entertaining people at Free Week 2011 were in the crowd.

* I’m defining “average music fan” as one who hits up at least 1 show a month and pays the cover to see a show.. yes... they are a dying breed

Five Music Lunches in Austin (Day 3 - 3/16/11) Admiral Fallow @ Takoba

All week I'm going to catch a live band every day at lunchtime. My mission.... get to a show, take a video.. take photos... and get back to work.

ANYONE living in Austin can take advantage of live, free music this week. Pack a lunch.. eat it on the way (or attend a show where they serve food).

Wednesday 3/16/11
(Late lunch = congested E. 6th)

Today I took a late lunch (2p) because I took the afternoon off to spend with family. I was meeting the family in Southpark Meadows about 45 minutes after I left work, so I thought... "Perfect, I'll jump up to E. 6th, catch the beginnings of the Brooklyn BBQ Show at Hotel Vegas.. and be down to Southpark Meadows... facil!
Well..  I got to the block where Hotel Vegas was, parked 1/2 in and 1/2 out of a No Parking zone, placed a little "I'm just unloading something, be right back" note on my dashboard (don't think that would prevent me from getting a ticket, but you never know) and walked towards Hotel Vegas.

Didn't hear any music... I walked towards the back, saw people milling about a stage, but no music. Then I heard it... music coming from... across the street. So, I wandered over there, and ended up at Takoba where a band from Scottland by the name of Admiral Fallow was playing.

"Holy Moses... and Holy Cow" these guys were really good. Enjoyed it... and next time I'm going to eat at Takoba... because it looked GOOD.

Anyhow... here's a video and photos.

Week 43: Paula Held - Drive

“I don't care about the moon, too hard to hold, too far away, I only care about you 'cause I can hold you every day” – I Don’t Care About The Moon

Paula Held
Drive

The debut release by Paula Held is a long time coming. It seems she’s been dabbling in music her whole life, but it wasn’t until she moved to Austin that she assembled a world-class group of players to lay down Drive. What she’s released is an adult contemporary jazzy record the likes of Joni Mitchell or Norah Jones.

“I Need To Drive” begins the album with a song that would be perfect for an easy cruise down one of Central Texas’ backroads. The second track, “Shoop Ta Sho” sounds like it could double musically for Rickie Lee Jones’ “Chuck E's In Love.” I love the descriptive wordplay of “Watermelon Moon Eye.”

My favorite track on Drive has got to be “Tumbleweed Heart.” It reminds me of “Sweet Butterfly” by Stanley Smith. It’s one of those unexpected love songs. “He had a tumbleweed heart, across the desert he whirled, and he spun like a top till all at once he stopped for a sagebrush girl.”

The entire album is certainly a departure from what I’m used to hearing from Austin bands. A welcome one. I’d place this more in the “timeless folk” arena. Held’s music seems it should be played in a listening room, like the Cactus CafĂ© (where her CD release show occurred recently).

Also, The cast of players on the Stephen Doster produced Drive is pretty impressive. It includes local players the likes of Doster (guitar), Chris Maresh (double bass), Red Young (keys), Ephraim Owens (trumpet), Dennis Ludiker (strings) and J.J. Johnson (drums).

You can see Held on television tomorrow at 4:30 on KEYE’s Afternoon show. Then on July 6 she’s playing a free show at the Cactus CafĂ© beginning at 8:30p.

In addition, Held is donating 10% of all CD sales to local charity Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). For more information on Paula Held, visit her website http://www.paulaheld.com/.

Week 42: Indofin - 2x Broken

(This is week 42 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks Project)

“I’ve got sunshine on my mind. I’ve got a heart so hard to find. I’ve got troubles no one cares to know” - Sunshine

Indofin
2x Broken
Nonprofit Boozer

Fresh from a trip to the Wakarusa Festival in Ozark, Arkansas, the guys in Indofin are gearing up for the release of their second full-length studio release 2x Broken. If you are a fan of the dirty-reggae-punk sound that Sublime’s live shows were chock full of, you’ll be a fan of this Austin three-piece.

The 12 tracks that make up this record combined come in at just over 30 minutes of what I would term as throwback reggae-punk music. Leading off with the distortion-driven “Honey,” the album’s sound is established early. The crawling reggae sound continues on such tracks as “Whatever,” “Nonprofit,” and “Riverside.” And songs like “Blue Light,” “Princess,” and “Missing Me” operate at a nice reggae-jam speed.

The vocals of T.J. Huerta are decidedly imperfect, but it’s very fitting for the tracks that comprise the album. The songs are full of regret and hearbreak. Apparently someone broke his heart good. But, the album is also a celebration of coming out the other side, in personal relationships and as a band. I think “Sunshine” is the key track to prove this point.

My favorite track on 2x Broken is a track called “Fingerfight.” The two minute jam is led by the crisp guitarwork of Huerta. The bass-line of Albert Huang keeps the song flowing while the percussion of Donny Mann brings it all together.
Enough with all this posturing, fingerfighting fist a cuffs I got myself an ex-girlfriend / enough with all the apologizing, If you don't so I'm probably gonna do the same / I'm feeling like a bird in a cage when you come by to say hi you take this pain away / I pray, and I pray.”
The album ends with “2x Broken” that begins as a classic country song before it leads into a punk rock jam that would make the Dropkick Murphys proud.

If you’ve been through a rough break-up this album may serve as therapy, and as I stated at the beginning of this review if you are/were a Sublime fan, you’ll ikely find yourself at home with Indofin.

They are releasing 2x Broken on July 13, and will have a hometown release party at an INsite Night on Friday July 16 at Encore (611 Red River) with The Buzzkillers, Under The Gun and Root Dimension. If you’re an early bird, they will be on your television between 7-9a playing Fox 7's Good Day Austin on July 16 as well.

You can pick up the album at the show, or if you can’t make it download it on Amazon.com or order it via their website - http://indofinmusic.com/

Week 39: Allison Thrash - Solitude

(This is week 39 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks Project)
“If you look you’ll see no pieces of me to pick up / I believe in the power of loving in the hours after midnight. / What’s to savor if you don’t even sip from the cup? / How can you give if you’re holding on so tight?” – Open House

Allison Thrash
Solitude
Head On Records

What’s in a name? When I first got this album in my hands I thought, what an interesting stage name for a metal/punk singer. Well, I was wrong on every level with that assumption. Allison Thrash is her ACTUAL name, and her brand of music is decidedly blues-driven. With her November 2009 release Solitude, Thrash and company serve up just under an hour of guitar-and-whiskey-soaked hardcore blues.

The musicianship on Solitude is fantastic, but what sets this album apart from others is the wonderfully unique voice of Thrash herself. It’s akin to some of the big-voiced blues women like Big Mama Thornton, Lavelle White and Nina Samone. If I had to place it alongside some Austin-based singers I’d have to say her voice has the power displayed by folks like Carolyn Wonderland and Shelley King. Thrash’s voice is raw, feminine (without being girly), and powerful.

The album kicks off with the age-old blues line “My man says he loves me” in the classic crawling blues track “Thrash and Moan.”

But she’s not the sit-there-and-take-it kind of songwriter. In fact, the track where the title of the CD came from “Gimme Some Solitude” begins by asking her man to leave her alone (“Gimme some solitude, baby / Tonight don’t come home”). She invites you to come to the party in “Open House” and wants to know “Do You Come With A Drink?” She takes a call from the devil himself in “Fight Dirty” and recounts some interesting life choices in “Rubies of Foolishness.”

The ballad “Mother” is a really heartfelt and beautiful tribute to Patricia Francis Thrash, who passed away in April 2010 after a long Alzheimer’s-type illness called Lowy Body Dementia.  “Mother, I put some of your roses in my yard / I look at them and things are a little less hard / I still wear your sweater when it gets cold / I still look at your picture when I'm losing my hold.”

The album concludes with another somber take-me-Home track,  “Lord, I’m Ready.”

Allison Thrash’s band is made up of Thrash (vocals), David Love (guitar), Jes Sproat (bass), and Jason Hurt (drums).

If you’re a fan of the blues, Solitude is for you. Catch her live to pick this album up. And you’re in luck, she’s playing an early show Friday night (7p-9p) at Rockin' Tomato on Lakecreek and 183 . Can’t make it? Check out http://www.allisonthrash.com/ for more information.

Week 30 - Brandon Rhyder - Head Above Water

(Week 30 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)

“What good is a man in my kind of shape / I’m a dollar short and you’re 10 days late.” – “You Can Count On Me”

Brandon Rhyder
Head Above Water

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Brandon Rhyder live but his  Conviction got worn out in my truck’s CD player a few years back (my review on Conviction) . So, I was pretty pumped when Head Above Water got to my hands.  His sound is lumped in with the Red Dirt and Americana scene. His music is what turns a lot of folks on to him, but the hidden gem of this singer is he’s a phenomenal songwriter, and he continues to impress with this release.

I have to admit, I wasn’t thrilled with the first single, “Rock Angel” when I heard it on the radio. It sounded too commercial for the Rhyder I was familiar with. But… it’s grown on me (and apparently I’m one of the few that it bothered as it hit #1 on the Texas Music Charts in February and it’s still in the top 30).

The title track is a beautiful ballad about being saved. I don’t know if it’s what he intended, but to me it’s a very spiritual song about finding God and trusting Him with the essence of your very being.

“You Can Count On Me” is a great underdog love story. In contrast “Ultimate Deceiver” is about the end of a relationship. “I’ll Take You” seems like a nice follow up to 2005’s “Back Roads” off Conviction. And “Battery” is about visiting the old stomping ground.

My favorite track on Head Above Water is “You Burn Me.” The lyrical genius on this song is worth the price of the CD alone. It’s a bit of a rocker about a former love. “You can burn me with a simple single touch / I get confused and think I’ve never loved this much / and without warning, you come rolling in like gasoline. / That’s why there’s never nothing left of me. ‘Cause you burn me.”

The bonus track, “Queen Of My Roost” sounds like something that Guy Forsyth would release. It’s a ragtime-charged love song that rocks like a “flapper in a 1920s dress.”

Head Above Water was produced by Walt Wilkins. It boasts twelve tracks (and an awesome bonus track), beautiful CD packaging and a “Making of” DVD.  I appreciate the lengths bands go through these days to get someone to actually buy a physical CD.

Check out Rhyder and band live at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos on April 8, or visit http://www.brandonrhyder.com to see where he’s playing and how to grab a copy for yourself.

Week 29 - Broken Teeth - Viva La Rock Fantastico

(Week 29 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)
“I don’t want to know your name / When you walk into the room tonite.
Just want to watch you dance, watch you prance, burn the room...
You're gonna get it right.”
-       Twister

Broken Teeth
Viva La Rock Fantastico
Perris Records

Long live rock. Long live Broken Teeth. With Viva La Rock Fantastico Jason McMaster (Watchtower, Dangerous Toys) and company has reemerged from the dark recesses of the Red River scene to remind us that a rock show should be a screaming, sleezy party with plenty of guitar solos.

With songs like the title track (which features guest vocals by Danko Jones) “All Hail The Alter” and “Exploder” it’s apparent that Broken Teeth has one thing in mind – the preservation and celebration of straight-up fist-in-the-air rock and roll. Metal church is in session and Rev. McMaster is at the pulpit.

Of course, a good sleeze-rock record wouldn’t be complete without the songs about the ladies (“Twister” and “Bullet”) and aggression (“Spitting Nails”) to round it out.

My personal favorite track on Viva La Rock Fantastico would have to be “Big Spender.” It’s one of those songs about people who are rich and throw money around… but then feel guilty. As Broken Teeth put it.. “visit the hungry, visit the fatted calf.”

21 years after Dangerous Toys released their self-titled debut, McMaster shows he’s still got the chops, skills, and desire to bring it. His voice has dropped into a scratchy-growl but it’s strong as ever. I don’t know if the first single “Blackheart” will reach the radio, but man… it’s better than 75% of what’s on there right now so I wish it would.

Even if it doesn’t end up on the radio, people are taking notice of this release. VH1’s Jim Florentine named it as his pick of the week on “That Metal Show” on the March 13, 2010 show. Even a fan made a funny little YouTube video where even Adolf Hitler touts its greatness.

If you like your rock served up charred with a nice AC/DC and Motorhead taste, you’ll be a fan of Viva La Rock Fantastico. Broken Teeth is McMaster (vocals), Jared Tuten (guitars), David Beeson (guitars), Brett McCormick (bass) and Bruce Rivers (drums). This is their fifth release.

They just played two nights of Texas Rockfest, so they’re not going to be playing in town for a few months, but check their website for upcoming shows - http://www.brokenteeth.com.

Week 26 - Eleven Fingered Charlie - Patterns

(Week 26 of my 52 Austin CD Reviews in 52 Weeks)

---

Eleven Fingered Charlie

Patterns

Eleven Fingered Charlie (EFC) has been a mainstay in the Austin/San Marcos music scene for nearly 10 years. In that time, they’ve been infusing reggae with ska and hip-hop in a very good way. I’d describe them as having a laid-back Sublime sound. In February they released Patterns, their third full-length release.

This is one of those albums that can carry the party. Their beat is infectious and could cause a person to break out dancing on a moments notice. Equally impressive are the lyrics which can switch from the party chants (“Stay low… get high” – Early Morning Rises) to cerebral (“Waters going dry / Fire in the sky / Got to make a difference in the days before we die.” - Unfold).

Patterns is a really nice statement of where the band is now. The production is tight and each song is fully realized. A lot of times it takes a much bigger band to make such a full sound but EFC does it with a four piece on this album. Nice.

The eleven tracks meld well together well. “Common Patterns,” a song about facing the truth of addiction, kicks off the album. “Loverman”  is a sweet relationship groove. Then there’s “Entrepreneur,” a very Sublime sounding track about a drug dealer. “River Runs Stronger” is a haunting track about living up to past actions.

The final track on the album is the very Jack Johnson sounding “This Old World.” The nice mandolin driven song is a standout on this album of great tunes. “Staring at this old TV screen to entertain our small minds. But you and I, we both know best. We know what’s going on. We’re just two pieces in this puzzle. In this complicated life.”

If you like your music with a little reggae influence, you’ll really dig Patterns. EFC is Travis Damron (Vocals, Guitar, harmonica), Chad Manes (Bass), Rodney Howell (Tenor Sax, keyboards), and Dustin Hall (Percussion). In March you can catch them at the Red Gorilla Music Festival and day two of ATX Wildfire. Not in Austin? They aren’t afraid of a road show check www.efcmusic.com for updates.
