Week 35: What's the Big Idea?

(This is Week 35 of my Fifty-Two Weeks of Music Do-It-Yourself Music advice)

What's the Big Idea?
Here’s a tweet I posted recently, based on a true story:

Musician: This group needs to do a compilation.
Me: Awesome. Here are the steps to do it.
Musician: Oh, not me...but someone should do that"

Apathy strikes again. Here’s the deal. You can do anything. I put out a compilation CD a few years ago. Did I know how to do it? Not at all. Did that stop me? No.

2007 INsite Compilation Cover*
If you’re going to invest in your band, you can do it with time and money. The more time you spend, the less money you’ll have to put in… for the most part. The sad thing is, most bands won’t take the time or spend the money to promote themselves. They think by booking a gig, they are done… and when only their girlfriend shows up to the show, they are quick to point fingers.
- The venue didn’t promote the show.
- The other bands didn’t tell their fans to hang out to see us.
- It was a weeknight and nobody goes out on a Tuesday.
- I didn’t like playing this club anyway, the owner’s a jerk.
- I made a Facebook post about it 3 hours before the show… Facebook doesn’t work.
- People don’t get our music.
- It happened when a great roadshow was playing at Stubb’s. They took our crowd.

In the weeks leading up to the show did you:

- Contact the other bands and try and do a promo-share thing?
- Make posters.
- Hang up the posters you made?
- Hang up the posters in a place where people who should like your music go?
- Pimp the show on social media?
- Give away tickets?
- Create a buzz?
- Play a local news/radio/podcast to promote?
- Hand out fliers w/ discount?
- Make promo music to hand out?
- Tell ANYONE?
If the answer to all or most of the items above is yes… well… you may have had an off night. I’d say you did a good job trying to promote the show.

If your answer is no to most of the items, you need to take your petty little complaints and think about what you did leading up to the show. You likely booked this show at least a month in advance. You had PLENTY of time.

You’ve got to figure out of you have a hobby or a job. If it’s a hobby, quit complaining. If it’s a job, step up.

Try different things. If you have an idea… a good idea… follow thorough and make it happen. Two weeks ago there was a weekend festival just outside of Tulsa Oklahoma called the Backwoods Bash. Five years ago I got a call from a buddy of mine who had an idea. Throw a festival to promote indie bands. We decided it was a good idea. We made it happen. There were four of us. No seed money. No big supporter. None of us had ever done something like that before.

But we decided it was a good idea. So, we just did it. We did it poorly.. but we did it. The people who came to the show didn't notice that we were barely holding the thing together by the skin of all of our collective teeth.

The deal was, we knew that the ONLY reason to have a "First Ever" is to have a "Second Annual."

One of my old bosses used to say that anything worth doing it worth doing badly. That means, if you have a good idea, pull it off... and learn froom mistakes and keep at it. THAT is how you promote. THAT is how you become known. THAT is how you succeed at life and music and business. Is it s guarantee? No.. but you surely won't have any regrets if you put your all into it and try and make things happen.

So... next time you have an idea think long and hard about it. Unless you're ready to jump into the water with both eyes open and not stop swimming until you reach land.... keep it to yourself.

If it's a good idea, jump in.. the water is awesome.

* About the compilation CD. There were 15 Austin area bands on it, we did a run of 1k.  Murillo Design designed the project, Fireside Creative did the physical packaging, Dewar's Whisky covered the cost (great promotional tool), and Ben Mills from RockShow Promotions organized a CD release party at Stubb's. Oh, and we gave the CDs away.

The Business of Music – The Problems of Promotion

Here's a column I wrote for the fine folks of Sparrowheart Music and Media. It should appear there soon.

The Business of Music – The Problems of Promotion

By Sean Claes

I began writing entertainment around 1996 when I moved from Laredo to San Marcos, Texas to finish up college. Since then I’ve written for several magazines, Websites, and newspapers. I began contributing to INsite Magazine in 2003, became Managing Editor in 2005 and together with my wife bought it in 2008.

Why the bio? Well, lets just say I’ve been approached by more musicians than a Roppolo's Pizzeria on a Sixth Street Saturday night. Some have their stuff together, some don’t. And others just think they are the stuff.

I’ve put together a column talking about some of the problems I’ve seen bands go through when they are in their promotional gear. I separated it into three topics – Promoting your music, live show, and your band. Hope you get some benefit from this.

MUSIC
CD-less CD Release Show
This one is simple, but it seems many bands have had this happen to them. DO NOT SCHEDULE YOUR CD RELEASE SHOT UNTIL YOUR CDS ARE IN YOUR HANDS. I learned this one the hard way. INsite put a CD out in 2007 called This Is INsite Austin Music. The night before the show, the 1,000 CDs came back from being printed and the design firm that was personally assembling them one by one spent an entire night putting ‘em together. We just made it. We were lucky. I’ve been at a CD release show where there was no actual CD yet. Don’t be that band. Have the CD in your hands before booking the show.

It’s Not Personal, But It Should Be
OK, your CD came in. Now you’ve got a list of media folks you need to send it to. When you send a CD in the mail to someone hoping on a review, how about putting a little personal note in there? Media folks get buckets of CDs in the mail. If you knew how many CD’s I sort through each week to pick the ones I decide to actually put in my CD player, you may be stunned. I know for me, when I get something from the band that is actually hand written, I’ll give the CD a spin. I wont always like what I hear, but I’ll take a chance. That’s the entire reason to send a CD to media folks... so they give you a listen.

At Least They Spelled Your Name Right
So you finally got the CD into the hands of someone who is willing to review it. When that review is printed they compare your music to the sounds of two dogs have sex and then falling into a meat grinder. Ouch (on many levels). You march right over and want to give that reviewer a piece of your mind. DON’T. Consider this. If what they said was so wrong, people will see through it. There are a bunch of CD reviewers who think they need to bash something in order to make it in print. The other side is, perhaps the person just flat didn’t like it. He/she is entitled to his/her opinion. All I know is, YOU will come out looking like a whiny little baby if you try and put the reviewer in their place. Suck it up and move on.

LIVE
How Do They Know?
Tell people when you have a gig. Make sure you use all of the electronic medias (Website, e-mail, Blog, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace...etc) to get the word out. But, don’t underestimate the power of “traditional” media. Print (newspaper, magazine), Radio, and Television are three options. These will cost money, but you can likely work deals with someone. For instance my magazine, INsite, has a special rate for local bands. I don’t want to turn this into a promo for the magazine, so if you want to know more, hit me up.

Then there’s always good old-fashioned posters and flyers. I like to tell the story of one of my favorite cock-rock bands, SINIS. They promoted their first show at Flamingo Cantina by handing out ten thousand flyers. They figured if they handed out that many flyers, they could get a couple hundred through the door. It worked. It was a sell out.

The point is, your efforts will be rewarded. The more people who know about you, the more chances that you’ll have more butts through the door next time you play.

Bring your merch to the show - Getting people to a show is the hardest part, but only half the effort. Now you want them to remember you in the morning. I can’t count the number of times I’ve walked into a show where a band I know has a CD/T-shirts/swag decided not to bring their merchandise. This is foolish on two levels.
1. Chances are, you’re not going to make much money at the door... so selling merch is where its it.
2. Every time you miss an opportunity to have someone walk away from a show with something of yours they can listen to, share, or wear, it’s a good thing.

Thank You Austin!
NEVER piss off the sound guy and ALWAYS thank the venue and bands who have played before you and who will be playing after. You earn your reputation as a live band. Austin is a HUGE music town. People learn quickly which bands are cocky little pricks who don’t draw a crowd and get into fights... and which bands rip it up onstage and know how to conduct themselves. But most of all, NEVER piss off the sound guy. He has the job to make you sound good. If you sound good, people might like your tunes... if they like your tunes, they might buy a CD... and come to another show... with more friends. Get it?

BAND PROMOTION
The Next Stevie Ray Vaughan?
In the last 10 or so years that I’ve been a entertainment writer I’ve come across no less than 25 guitarists that were touted as the next Stevie Ray Vaughan. You can play grooves that would make the entire fanbase of the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan smile... but you’ll never be him... nor should you want to be. It’s got to the point that I won’t listen to a CD that claims that anymore.

It’s almost as bad as calling a band the “best kept secret” in town. You aren’t the next anyone... and if your band is a secret, you aren’t promoting well enough. Get on it.

Never Underestimate Who Your Audience May Be.
So you work at a deli to make ends meet before you hit it big with music. Mention your band to as many people as possible every day. The lady picking up a tuna sandwich might just be your future biggest fan, or the owner of a big club, or a magazine for that matter. Don’t judge a book by its cover either. She may not look like she’d be into your music, but if I walked into a room, nobody would peg me as a fan of New York’s Every Time I Die or Austin’s Grupo Fantasma but they are two of my top choices in those genres.

Another example? My wife walked into a UPS Store in San Marcos a few years back and Randy Rogers happened to be working there (This is a year or so before the Randy Rogers Band signed a major record deal and he was just beginning to play regularly at Cheatham Street Warehouse). He casually mentioned to her that he was in a band. She mentioned her husband was a music writer. I ended up reviewing his 2003 release (http://seanclaes.2.forumer.com/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=132&st=0#entry196) for INsite Magazine as I was a contributor.

Being a genuine nice guy net him two lifelong fans and a CD review in an Austin magazine. Be that guy for your band.

Following Up
When you promote your band, make sure to hold every part of it accountable. What efforts resulted in paid tickets through the door? Did the $3 off at the door cards get used? Did the radio personality you tried to get the CD to actually receive it? Did the Marketing Director? Follow up.

There have been entirely too many bands that I’ve never even heard of and I’ve gotten a CD in the mail. No pre-contact. No follow up. Usually I don’t listen to them. Same is the case of the bands I see when I’m out at clubs. A lot of bands have a CD they’d love for me to review. Smart bands hand me a CD at the club. Smarter bands hand me a CD, and ask for my contact information. The smartest bands, get me a CD, get my contact information and follow up to see how I liked the CD.

If you are trying to make it in the music business, you need to treat it like a business. Make a plan. Make some goals. Give yourself a deadline. Make it happen. When you hit the stage or write the music or practice.. that’s all about the music. Don’t let business mess with that. But in the same breath, don’t let the stereotype of being a “musician” keep you from being in business.

Music + business = Music Business.

Just Make A Move

But the one thing that always gets me is they never put their ideas into actions.

This is usually on the heels of finding out that I have my hands in a lot of things. I am a husband and father of two fantastic daughters, a client consultant, copywriter, owner of an entertainment magazine in Austin, Communications Chair of my church, have a photo blog, am part of a group that throws a yearly festival in Oklahoma, host monthly concerts in Austin, and have been involved in my neighborhood.

I'm not special. I'm not someone who has anything figured out. I'm just a guy who makes a move. I do something. I don't like to talk about making things happen. I like the put my efforts into actually MAKING them happen. I'm horrible at organizing. My time is stretched too thin. I don't have a lot of money. I love my wife and family and love to spend time with them. I have excuses. I could easily say "I don't have the time for that..." and people would totally understand.

I'm not built that way. I'm kind of like the gust of wind that propels the fuzzy white things off that flower (or weed) in the photo above. I know a lot of stuff is going to be flying through the air and I know that not everything is going to end well.. I just know that nothing will succeed if every effort isn't put in to making it happen.

Some of those seeds will land, take root, and grow.
If you are talking about doing something. Stop talking. Take a deep breath and blow with all your might. Watch as your ideas take flight and follow your heart.

Just make a move.
Do it.
I dare you.

Background on the photo. I took that in Mannford, Oklahoma at the Second Annual Backwoods Bash. We had a great time. We had space for thousands of campers. We had just over 300 (It threatened rain for 2 days). Are we doing it again? Heck yes.

You know... That's a WEIRD Band Name.

I was going over the April 2009 issue of INsite Magazine and realized we have stories on ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Mike Truth and the Replacement Killers, as well as Los Lobos. I'll admit, Los Lobos isn't that strange, but the other two could be considered out there...

Anyhow, I thought... I wonder if anyone had a good list of weird band names out there. So... being the master of Google that I am, I looked it up.

Seems there's been a site since the mid-1990s called the Canonical List of Weird Band Names. As of my visit, they had 1,517 names on the list.

I won't put the entire list up... but I'll sample one band a letter through the alphabet.
See the whole thing at their site. I've chosen bands that have links tho their sites. Neat.

Austin Bands, do you DO512?

DO512.com is a great tool to promote shows and network around. If you're not aware of it... you should be. The basis is... you can post all of your band information and/or show information and it creates a page for you complete with a linkable, repostable "poster" of the image you uploaded or the list of the bands that are going to be there. Now.. it gets put in the hands of the "people" next... as folks who are members of do512 can click "I like it" to any show... and the more votes a show gets, the more likely it'll rise to the top of the day's search.. and/or be included in the end of the week's "Top Picks" that is e-mailed out to the list of do512'ers.

INsite Magazine, has teamed up with DO512 and they are working together to produce the listings* that run in the magazine. They are also using do512 for the promotion of their INsite Nights. Here's the next 4 INsite Night links... you'll see examples of both with poster and without. If you are a do512 member, please click "I Like It" on these. It would rock.

Vote for this event on Do512.com! INsite Night - Point of Contact, Under the Gun, Hazard of the Industry and Unnamed Project for Revenge
Vote for this event on Do512.com! Squint, She Craves, Dented, Forever Falls, Call Me Sensei - INsite Night
Vote for this event on Do512.com! Full Service + Friends - INsite Night
Vote for this event on Do512.com! INsite Night - The Banner Year, She Craves, 6 Pack Deep, Litany For The Departed

*Deadline for inclusion of listings in INsite is always the 21st of the month for the next month. So... use do512 for promoting your gigs... it's easy... and a pretty cool tool... and you may end up doubling your promotional efforts by ending up in INsite.

Sean Claes Birthday Bash 2/9/08

INsite Managing Editor Sean Claes is turning 35 and we're celebrating with an all-ages show at Austin's Red Eyed Fly. Even if you don't know Sean from Adam (here's a hint... Adam will be the first guy playing at 8:30p.m.... Sean doesn't play piano) you are invited to see some of the best bands in Austin.

The line-up:

  1. 12:30-Language Room:
Winners of the Music Lab Battle of the Bands in December 2007
  2. 11:30-One Eyed Doll
Kimberley Freeman will surprise, interest, shock, hate, love, and entertain you... all in one song.
  3. 10:30-The Banner Year
2008 should be a banner year for The Banner Year. See them now. Ask me about "Monolith"
  4. 9:30-Say When
Bright, explosively energetic rock from Boston. Yes, Boston is invading Sean's Birthday show. It's OK.. Sean's been on the field at Fenway Park, he's made a snowman at Harvard... hell... his sister works at Harvard. Sean likes Boston. And, you will like Say When.
  5. 8:30-Adam Donmoyer & The Naughty Bits
R- Rated Alternative Lounge Music. Don't worry, he's not psycho. He's lonely and he only wants to talk. Yes, that is him outside your window.

In addition, the first 50 people in the door get a copy of the first INsite Compilation CD FREE.

Want a poster?

2007 Totally Austin Gift Guide

(This originally ran in the December issue of INsite Magazine - insiteaustin.com)

The 2007 Totally Austin Gift Guide

By Sean Claes

So, it's mid-December and you've still not figured out what gifts to get everyone on your list for the holiday. Maybe you need a quick gift for a company party, or that perfect something for that special woman or man in your life. If you're like me, you may have had over a dozen friends who have recently had children, so you're scrambling to pick something out to give them.

INsite took the liberty to collect some things that are true Austin originals. All of the following items are made in Austin by Austinites and sold in local shops and online. Many of these items cost less than $50, so you can pick up something for everyone and still be able to afford the gas to deliver them.

On The Body

This beautiful blue dress is 100% linen and made by All Dressed Up and Shy (alldressedupandshy.com ). It sells for $108 and can be found at Parts and Labour (1604 S Congress Ave)

These slings, by Emily Funderburg - owner/designer 360 Bebe (360bebe.com), are stylish and extremely practical. Find them at the Austin Baby Store, and Due Maternity (3801 N Capital of Texas HWY)

In The Body

The Independence Brewing Company

The Independence Brewing Company (independencebrewing.com/) has been around for over three years year now. It's been told to me that a favorite is the Bootlegger Brown Ale, but I swear by the Freestyle Wheat. Either way, it's a neat way to bring Austin to a friend. You can find this brew all over - Central Market, Grape Vine Market, various HEBs, various Twin Liquors, Wheatsville Co-Op, Whole Foods, Whip In, and many neighborhood convenient stores like Bread Basket, C-Mart, etc.

Boomerang's Gourmet Veggie & Meat Pies

Looking for a good Australian Meat or Veggie pie with an Austin twist? I knew that you were... and look no further than Boomerang's Gourmet Veggie & Meat Pies (boomerangspies.com/). Eat or buy frozen at the restaurant (3110 Guadalupe), buy them at Central Market or have them shipped by the dozen to Utah (or any other state).

Kerbey Lane Cafe

Kerbey Lane Cafe (kerbeylanecafe.com ). A restaurant that is known as much as an Austin Original as the food it serves. They've put together gift baskets for the holidays. Remind the Texas-Ex of their college days by sending them some gingerbread pancake mix. Four locations around Austin: 3704 Kerbey Lane, 2700 S. Lamar, 2606 Guadalupe, and 12602 Research.

Sweet Leaf Tea

Have you ever had Sweet Leaf Tea (sweetleaftea.com/)? I must admit, I'm not a fan of the sweet tea, so I never thought I'd enjoy this product, but I got my hands on some of their Raspberry Tea and MAN it was slap-your-grandma good. You can find it at all the major shopping centers. Everywhere that sells drinks... really.

Paula's Texas Orange / Lemon

Paula's Texas Orange and now Paula's Texas Lemon premium liquers (paulastexasspirits.com). Now you can get both in a neat gift basket at Twin Liquors, Spec's, and Western Beverage (Costco). Pick up some Tito's Vodka while you're there... I hear they make a wicked good combination.

Spiceburst Gourmet Spices

Add a little Austin-made spice to someone's life. Spiceburst Gourmet Spices (spiceburst.com). These are an assortment of infused sea salts. The photo is of their Garlic Saltburst, but they also boast Chili Lime, Chipolte, Cracked Malabar and many others. ATE Foods

Ever wanted a fantastically cooked meal custom-ordered and delivered to your door from a place that doesn't have "Pizza" in it's name? Everyone else has too. Why not get them some gourmet food from ATE Foods (atefoods.com). It's a different menu each week. Go onto their site and check it out for yourself. December 17 boasts chicken curry, ricorra and feta skillet pie and the one that stands out to me... Hunter's stew with creamy polenta. Yum.

One Eyed Doll, SINIS, Deb O'Keefe, and Patrice Pike are just a few of the talented women who grace the new edition... and the bonus is the sales benefit the Austin Music Foundation (austinmusicfoundation.org.). Awesome. You can find it at: Book People, The Calendar Store in Barton Creek Square Mall and their kiosk at Highland Mall, Cheapo Discs, Prima Dora, Waterloo Records and CDFuse.com.

These are made by Angie Pearson throught her company called Simple Southern Scents (simplesouthernscents.blogspot.com). You can find them at Parts and Labour for about $7 a piece.

The Work*Shop

GNOMES! Why buy something premade when you can create it yourself! The Work*Shop (theworkshopaustin.com/) is a walk-in arts and crafts studio. Remember, if you're looking for something for me... I like gnomes. Not creative enough to do it yourself.. they actually DO sell pre-made stuff too. Check out the funky vinyl record-bowls.
